Ramirez Community Projection Results

IP: 166.3
R: 89
H: 178 (9.6 H/9)
2B: 28
3B: 3
HR: 23 (1.2 HR/9)
BB: 58 (3.1 BB/9)
HBP: 3
K: 75 (4.0 K/9)
RA: 4.80
FIP: 5.17
XERA: 4.76
ERC: 4.52

I'll be honest, I really and truly can't shake this impression that Ramirez is going to suck-diddly-uck. Like, really really bad. Not quite Joel bad, since his 2006 campaign was one for the ages, but bad, like Mark Redman bad, the kind of bad where there's just enough good to show you why he has a Major League job, but so much bad that the good only looks good in comparison to the extraordinary suck. Like having a wasp sting you three times in the eye and then once in the leg before moving back to the face. The only hard-and-fast stipulation of temporary relief is that you're put in a moderately better state than you were in before, so by those guidelines a 5 IP/4 ER start mixed in between a bunch of 2/8's certainly counts as welcome mitigation.

I don't have any particular reason for holding this belief, mind you. Granted, his stat line is pretty weak, but there's no glaring indication that he's about to fall off the cliff, so who knows. Sometimes even the most numerically-inclined of a crowd have trouble overcoming their gut feelings. In this case, I damn sure hope the rest of you are more right than I am.

Wow.
What's with the strikeouts?

by Coach Owens on Mar 12, 2007 9:49 PM PDT   0 recs

He doesn't strike anybody out.
He has a career 4.28 K/9
That's a right kerfuffle!

I don't know about you
but I'm kind of over the whole "closer-with-more-strikeouts-than-starter" novelty.

by Jeff on Mar 12, 2007 9:57 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It's weird.
Putz has a decent shot at out K-ing three fifths of our starting rotation, and an outside shot of out K-ing Weaver as well.

That's pretty bad when your closer is second on the team in strikeouts.

That's a right kerfuffle!

Look at the positive
it just means we have a badass relief ace

Putz doesn't count as a relief ace...
Unless Dudley starts using him in the 8th.

I actually think HoRam
will be decent

My Guess...
Your concern is an irrational subliminal overreaction to the fact that there were so many more options for trading Soriano that you're still trying to figure out just what Bavasi was thinking in making that trade.  Combine that with the complete scratch-your-scalp-until-
you've-given-yourself-a-partial-frontal-lobotomy move that was the Vidro/Snelling+Fruto trade, and it's no wonder you have that feeling...
Iceberg, right ahead!

I might be in the minority but
I think HoRam is going to help the team more than Soriano would have because our depth as SP is so much worse than in the bullpen.  If Soriano could have been switched back to SP, then ignore what I said before.

I forgot to enter my projection, but
I think that a lefty groundball pitcher in Safeco with Beltre and Betancourt behind him has the potential to surprise everyone.

Surprised by how bad he is?
Sorry, I can't let it go. :(

Aw, Jeff.
You're just always trying to crush my spirit, aren't you.

I'm with you
I was only angry about this trade because I thought Soriano should have brought more in. Else, Ho-Ho looks to be a good fit, and I was glad to see Bavasi looking for pitchers that fit the team rather than the park.
Bretticus reports from AZ that Ho-ho's got some good late break on his sinker, so that's something. Maybe he doesn't strike many (or any) guys out, but I'd be more worried about how many he walks than how many he fans.
Anyway, how many starts he makes is more a concern for me than their quality. Or rather how many starts he can make while fully healthy.

This was the only projection I haven't taken
part in.

I'm feeling the same way as Jeff, but I also think that if any of the new acquisitions prove to be a nice surprise, it's going to be Horacio.

Yeah
He won't be Joel-level awful, but don't expect much more than a serviceable but mediocre #5 starter that has a few terrible starts.  Safeco and being a lefty groundballer will help him some, but that's about all that's going for him.

I'd even consider skipping his starts or Weaver's in hitting parts like Homerquest if I were the M's.  That leads to an obvious dilemma of who to replace them with, but can anyone else do worse than them?

by Gomez on Mar 12, 2007 11:56 PM PDT   0 recs

Really?
Weaver and Washburn I can see.  But Ho should be exactly the type of pitcher that would do OK in Homerquest.  Groundballers fare much, much, much better in that environment.

I'm not High on Ho, per se, but I do think that as long as both he and our IF defense are healthy, he'll do just fine.

"like Mark Redman bad"
Jeff thinks he's going to be an All Star!

by AnotherAaron on Mar 13, 2007 7:11 AM PDT   0 recs

I don't know if Jeff wants to do it
but it might be interesting to ask everybody to do an overall projection of RS and RA for the mariners next year.
